rasquachismo and utopia

Yeah, utopia has come up more in the last two years than I ever anticipated. Like we talked about with Beuys, utopias tend towards the fascist and exclusionary. Foucault talked about the idea of ‘heterotopia’ which is (very loosely) the idea of one place that serves multiple overlapping and distinct purposes. This has been adopted by some as a postmodern utopia- since we are aware of the need to accommodate multiplicity, but still long for community and social  improvement.

But what is most interesting to me about the bauhaus is the invisibility of its aesthetic to its practitioners–when Breuer say his  “metal furniture is…’styleless'” we know it isn’t true. Did they really not see it? It sounds like everyone else did.

And, can you imagine an art school run out of town? We’re lucky if anybody notices at all.
